A Bride's guide to Makeup and Hair Trial
You booked your makeup artist and the next step is to lock your look.
Yes, this part of the wedding is fun but for many can be a little more complicated.
- You can be the bride that doesn't wear much makeup or have any idea of where makeup goes, and the idea of an artist doing it sounds really scary!
- You wear minimal makeup, but the last time (prom) you got your makeup done... well it was close to horrible, you went home and washed your face...
- Or you can be the one that knows all the latest products, your makeup bag can be more like 5 and it takes over your room! and since you are into makeup you can be very picky.
Here are a few tips to help you get ready for your trial-
1- Decide if you want to come alone or bring a friend with you! Choose wisely, pick the one you feel completely yourself around, the one that will let the whole process happen and then give you feedback because she knows you. Remember, by this time you kinda know what you are looking for so don't let them talk you out of your look! But seriously, I want to get to know you! I want to give you my best, and that's by getting to know you!
2- Wear a top that has a similar cut to your wedding dress, and color! NO turtle neck sweater when the neckline of your dress is low.
3- Find your look! Polish your Pinterest ideas before your trial. Be aware that just because a picture on Pinterest looks beautiful it doesn't mean your eyes or hair will look the same! I suggest looking at a picture and describe what you like about it. Do you like it because the lip color is what you are looking for? Or is it because the lip color compliments the models in the picture? Remember pictures can be photoshop, don't fall in love with something that just isn't you.
4- Dress, venue, season, and time! Not every look goes with your dress, not every dress goes with your venue! And not all looks are great for every season! You are unique, make every detail personalized.
5- Playing with your hair before your trial- up or down, off your face, part it to the side, to the other side. Each style for a few days. What do you get from this? You will learn what you like and dislike, you may find out you hate showing your ears or that you love your hair swept to the side. Now with this information, you can ask your artist to focus on your best features, making you feel comfortable and confident in your choices.
6- Prep your skin and treat it with a mask the night before, a good exfoliant and sheet masks will give you a radiant glow!
7- Wash your hair, It can be the day or night before... you know your hair best! Sometimes a little oil during the day helps flyaways stay in place. Keep your hair fresh! If we need texture, we can add powders, sprays to achieve that look
8- Ask for recommendations, skin, brows, lashes! Tanning!! Starting new regiments before your trial makes a huge difference!
9- Bring a pen and paper to take notes on things you need to remember
10- And lastly, ladies! Trials are for you to find the look and to make a few changes if need be. No, the trial will not be “the look”, you will want to pay attention throughout the day to see how the trial look reacts to a full day wear. Your artist will appreciate your feedback and will try their best to solve any request or issues.
Hope this information helps you in some way! Remember, stay calm and positive, in that moment your artist is your #1 fan!
xoxo

I never thought to wear a white top, and I wore black because that’s what I felt most comfortable in (mistake #1), lol! Thank you for providing such great insight into hair and makeup—it was an extremely informative read! :)

Kristen Honeycutt - This is such great advice! A key part of wedding planning is finding a vendor you love, and then trusting them with their expertise! I so wish I would have spent more time seeking out a makeup artist when I got married.

Lauren - Thanks for the informative post. October feels far enough away to keep procrastinating on finding a H&MU artist for me, 5 bridesmaids, and two parents...but sounds like I should get working.
